SASBCP 2024

Aim:

The South African for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (SASBCP) holds three competitions for the Best Scientist Award (in basic, clinical, and regulatory pharmacological sciences, respectively) during its annual congress meetings to foster and promote research in pharmacology among Young Pharmacologists, as stipulated by the Society Objectives in our Constitution.

Who is eligible?

The competition for the Young Pharmacologist Award is open to persons who meet the following criteria:

  • Paid-up SASBCP membership at the time of submission.
  • Comply with the SASBCP definition of a Young Pharmacologist, being a student in Pharmacology at honors, master’s, or PhD level (post-doc students are excluded).
  • The data presented should not have been presented before (i.e. data presented for the first time at a meeting of the SASBCP).
  • The candidate should not be a previous awardee of this competition for presentation of data from the same degree of which data is to be presented at this competition (e.g. an awardee who presented data from a master’s study may participate by presenting data for a PhD study).

Procedure:

The following are the general procedures followed:

  • Complete, sign and send the “Young Pharmacologist Declaration Form” (available above) to the Congress Organizers.
  • Submit the abstract online, specifying your intention to enroll for the competition.
  • Clearly state whether the article is entered for the “Basic” or “Clinical” or “Regulatory” category.
  • The competition session is usually scheduled for the afternoon of the first full day of the congress, and typically entails for each contestant a 10-minute presentation plus 5 minutes for questions.
  • A judging panel is appointed, consisting of international guest speakers and local scientists specializing in either Clinical or Basic Pharmacology. An EXCO member will be identified who will be responsible for collating the marks awarded.
  • Participants are judged according to the criteria set in the “Evaluation Form” (attached for your convenience).

Rules:

The following rules apply:

  • All participants must comply with the eligibility criteria and procedures explained above.
  • In all cases it remains the responsibility of the submitting Young Pharmacologist to confirm timely receipt of the abstract for the purpose of the competition by the Organizers.
  • All submissions for the Young Pharmacologist Competition shall be subject to approval by the Executive Committee of the SASBCP.
  • The decision by the judging panel is final and not negotiable.
